Many aspects over the past four years have drawn me to the Bear, But i feel it really began during my transformative year in Canada where i can across two wild cubs in Whistler. I knew that the mother couldn’t have been far away; i remember the strong feelings of fear and respect. Canada is also where i met my favorite Bear & my husband Jeremiah.

When i was given the opportunity to learn the art of jewellery making, the first thing i made was the Bear Metal, “long drop earrings”in bold brass. I loved them. Clienteles loved them. This was the beginnings of Bear Metal, which developed into a bold collection of jewellery inspired by my favorite creature.

Recent research enlightened my understanding of the Bear as a “spirit animal”, a strong reocurring totem amongst many: Shamans, Vikings, Inuits and North American tribes. The Bear became respected and regarded as a healer, a mother, a leader and a power house of strength and fearlessness. I feel strongly connected to these spiritual representations. I remember stories of my Nanna’s visits to North America, the tribes she met, making dream catchers at camp with her and i still own the handmade beaded jewellery she brought back.

The family’s handmade Indian dress is here in Australia with me where i use it as a display model for my exhibitions. For me this has been largely a journey of Spirit which has inspired and guided my work. The following quote resonates with my soul and simply sums up the answer to “Why Bear?”

“The spirit of the bear is a strong source of support in times of difficulty. It promotes courage and a stable foundation to face challenges.
When a bear shows up as a spirit animal in your life it is perhaps time to stand up for your beliefs and truths.
This power animal will provide the support and strength.

The Bear is also a guide to take leadership in your life. This animal is feared and admired for its strength, its presence inspires respect. Its powerful stature will inspire you to step into a leadership role in your life and take action without fear, When you invoke the power of the Bear totem, reflect on qaulities of inner strength and how you can project them in your world”
